Cost of zoloft prescription drug - the same number that would be needed to treat 2,500 people with depression" (p. 31). Yet as of 2006 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was warning doctors that if this trend continues, the number of depression-related suicides may more than triple (CDC, 2007). "There's a lot of anxiety in the doctors' rooms about this. question is whether there's something different with the medications or not. We're now studying that" (p. 44). "There is a definite correlation between antidepressants and suicide rates" (p. 65). These are alarming numbers and show that a lot more work needs to be done understand the connection between antidepressants and suicide. These concerns are often raised by clinicians and researchers when they examine studies about this issue. The question is, how do we interpret this kind of information? Are we just going to take what the pharmaceutical companies tell us and ignore other sources that show there may be another explanation? Or are we going to dig into the scientific literature on depression and suicide to see if we can find a pattern? One way of trying to separate the two could be by studying the effect of antidepressants on suicide attempts. I recently read two studies – one led by researchers at the University of Maryland School Medicine (O'Connor and colleagues), one led by researchers at Harvard Medical School (Holtzman and colleagues) -- in the Archives of General Psychiatry detailing the relationship between use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors antidepressants (SSRIs) and suicidal behavior. I want to go beyond these two studies and look at suicide attempts separately so that I have not just looked at depression and suicide in one study. In the first study, called Prozac in Adolescents the researchers studied a relatively small sample of adolescents for a long time. The study followed 543 adolescents for 10 years (O'Leary and colleagues). In this trial, the researchers looked at impact of increasing doses selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on subsequent suicidal behavior. The Prozac in Adolescents study was also the first research to show that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) had a direct relationship to subsequent suicide attempts (Holtzman and colleagues). For the purpose of this paper, I are focusing on SSRI antidepressants as are the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants in the United States. This will make it easier to understand these findings, because other classes have been examined, but you will note that SSRIs were the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants. Here is the results of Prozac in Adolescents study: As you can cost of zoloft 25 mg see, for all 8 months of treatment, individuals who had been using SSRI antidepressants 1.3 times the risk of making suicide plans (suicide attempts) compared to individuals with no use of these drugs (see graph in O'Leary and colleagues). This is a high rate of suicide attempt rate, but it isn't a surprise. As shown in the graph, risk of suicide attempt was doubled with each increase in dose of SSRIs from 3 mg to 10 (O'Leary and colleagues). This is a very interesting fact to us because we know that suicide is a precipitating event in depression (Gardner and others, 2004). This research shows that the use of SSRI antidepressants was associated with more suicide attempts among adolescents. There is a lot of potential here to interpret these findings. Are SSRIs really this bad? Of course, no one can determine the exact causal relationship here because antidepressants have never been studied as a potential cause of suicide, and this was a retrospective study that looked at the use of SSRI antidepressants over 10 years. What did this study tell us? It didn't definitively say that SSRIs are really powerful a risk factor for suicide. It did find something that might be the mechanism for an increase in suicide: the suicide attempts. other words, SSRIs increase the likelihood of making a suicide attempt. Is that possible? After all in any clinical trial, researchers try to determine all of the variables that are confounding so it is possible to remove these and see whether the Cost of zoloft per pill results still hold. In this case, the researchers removed a number of factors and.
